Is The Great Global Warming Swindle a Swindle of its own?

First, I want to say global warming is real! Whether or not you believe that it is anthropogenic is your own choice. I am going to talk about errors found in the movie The Great Global Warming Swindle from two different sources, the first being a movie on YouTube, The Big Swindle Movie, and the next being an article I found on the internet.

In The Big Swindle Movie, Peter Sinclair reveals that The Great Global Warming Swindle has some hidden flaws. The most commonly viewed versions clearly state that volcanoes emit more CO2 than all of the earth’s man made sources of CO2 combined. However, Peter Sinclair mentions a website that says humans emit more than 130 times the amount of CO2 that volcanoes emit. That is the equivalent of 8000 more volcanoes like Kilauea.

So I checked the website. It took a little reading, but I discovered humans emit more CO2 than volcanoes. In the “Volcanic Gases and Climate Change Overview” article, a provided link goes to a PDF file dealing specifically with volcanic and anthropogenic CO2 emissions:

Do the Earth’s volcanoes emit more CO2 than human activities? Research findings indicate that the answer to this frequently asked question is a clear and unequivocal, “No.” Human activities, responsible for a projected 35 billion metric tons (gigatons) of CO2 emissions in 2010 (Friedlingstein et al., 2010), release an amount of CO2 that dwarfs the annual CO2 emissions of all the world’s degassing subaerial and submarine volcanoes (Gerlach, 2011).

The published estimates of the global CO2 emission rate for all degassing subaerial (on land) and submarine volcanoes lie in a range from 0.13 gigaton to 0.44 gigaton per year (Gerlach, 1991; Varekamp et al., 1992; Allard, 1992; Sano and Williams, 1996; Marty and Tolstikhin, 1998). The preferred global estimates of the authors of these studies range from about 0.15 to 0.26 gigaton per year. The 35-gigaton projected anthropogenic CO2 emission for 2010 is about 80 to 270 times larger than the respective maximum and minimum annual global volcanic CO2 emission estimates. It is 135 times larger than the highest preferred global volcanic CO2 estimate of 0.26 gigaton per year (Marty and Tolstikhin, 1998).

Peter Sinclair also talks about all the fake information on the graphs. The first graph from TGGWS, supposedly created by NASA, shows that the majority of the 20th century’s warming occurred before the 1940s. However, this graph is a fabrication. He then shows the real graph from NASA, which shows the majority of warming occurs after the 1970s. The other graph shown in the movie TGGWS resembles the first but gives no accreditation. The different versions of TGGWS were released only days apart. In fact, the false information shown in this graph came from a fake paper from The Oregon Institute of Science and Medicine.

An additional graph deals with the Holocene Warm Period. TGGWS asserts that the Holocene Warm Period’s temperatures averaged without a doubt higher than today’s temperatures. Peter Sinclair proves that the data was false by searching the NOAA. So I searched Google for NOAA, which resulted in a website that leads to a page all about the Holocene basically backing up Peter Sinclair’s statement. The temperature averaged warmer than today only in the northern hemisphere and only during the summer. Also the orbital speed and temperature variations described by NOAA backed up Peter Sinclair’s statement.

The article I found doesn’t point out as many flaws. S. Fred Singer states that the movie An Inconvenient Truth has met its match, repeating the similarities between solar activity and temperature that were central to TGGWS position (later proven wrong by Peter Sinclair). Singer and the scientists fail to mention the recent decrease in solar activity while temperatures continue to increase. Singer concludes by stating global warming won’t hurt us in the long run, giving other topics to worry about such as cures for diseases. I agree that cures are needed, but the earth should be helped.

I believe global warming is anthropogenic and natural. While the earth fluctuates in temperature, recent findings indicate otherwise. I have been open to both sides, but the facts show that there are abnormalities in recent increases. Accurate facts are difficult to find because of the mindset of humans. Everyone must be heard and correct, but by listening we can find the truth behind global warming.

When I saw your title, I just HAD to read your post, because the title was enticing. I love the way you used a rhetorical question to name your post. Your specificity of your information made your piece extremely interesting. Great job!

I really like your critique on “The Great Global Warming Swindle” by using “The Big Swindle Movie”. I also applaud you for going the extra mile to find other sources to back up the claims in response to the TGGWS. Keep up the good work!

Lauren, I really like how you really got into detail about the topic of global warming. What made me like your post so much was the fact that you had very good facts! Many other people have started out with what they think and they haven’t been going into great detail or giving much information about what they are writing about.

I too really liked how at the beginning you stated where you were going with the post and what you believed. I also enjoyed how you dug deep to find out background knowledge about the Great Global Warming Swindle. You didn’t just say that the movie was wrong, you backed it up with great facts!
      Excellent job overall!!
