As many of you may have noticed, there have been a significant number of severe storms in the past 10 years such as Hurricane Isaac, Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Sandy. These storms have been devastating for many people, and have destroyed homes, jobs, and lives. The question raised is “Are these storms caused by global warming, and if so is this process anthropogenic?” As of right now, we do not have an exact answer, however; many climatologists believe they have evidence that proves these storms are happening due to anthropogenic global warming. Since global warming is warming the earth, it is warming the ocean as well. The problem is, if a storm travels through a warm patch in the ocean, it can get increasingly more violent. This means if we can reduce global warming, we are saving these horrible storms from destroying our homes, jobs and lives.
“Global warming is making hot days hotter, rainfall and flooding heavier, hurricanes stronger and droughts more severe.”
Another giant problem due to global warming is melting ice. Ice and glaciers in places such as Greenland, the Arctic, Alaska and the Antarctic are losing ice at a rate 5 times faster than melting in the 1990’s. To top that off, melting is happening 60% faster than the United Nations predicted it would happen in 2007 (only five years ago). At this rate, most of Florida could be under water in the next 200-300 years. The problem is, many people will not start to care about this issue until timing is way too late. If we do not take steps to stop global warming soon, it will become too late.
One thing about global warming that most people do not realize is that there have been natural processes preventing the effects all along. Plants are one of the best natural resources we have to help prevent global warming. These can include any sort of plant such as trees, flowers, algae, vines and many more. Some may ask if the plants are stopping Global Warming. The answer is no; not entirely, but they are definitely helping. Plants absorb carbon dioxide in the air. In other words, instead of the carbon dioxide adding to the already polluted atmosphere, the plants on earth absorb some of that carbon dioxide. This action (Photosynthesis) has slowed the process of Global Warming, benefitting everyone.
Photosynthesis is the process by which plants absorb Carbon Dioxide. Photosynthesis occurs when plants use the energy from sunlight and convert that sunlight into chemical energy to fuel the organism’s activities. Unlike us, plants release oxygen as their waste, and we breathe their oxygen in. Likewise, we release carbon dioxide as our waste, and the plants absorb our carbon dioxide.
As you can see, plants are vital to us humans because they absorb carbon dioxide. This results in a healthier planet, and helps by giving us oxygen to breathe. If you cannot do something large for the environment, you can start by planting more trees, grass, flowers, ivy, or any type of plant or greenery that uses the process of photosynthesis.
I wonder; however, exactly how many plants we would have to plant to make a huge environmental difference.
Is the earth okay? The movie Everything’s Cool states that we are in for some deep trouble if we do not act against global warming NOW. It is a sad truth that dying animals and crumbling homes are not enough to convince Americans that the world we live in may not be a safe environment for much longer. As I have said before, I really hope that I am wrong. I hope I am wrong that our Earth may not be a healthy place to live in 50 years. I personally do not want to see the effect global warming will have on our culture. If we do not start to stop global warming now, I just may. There is nowhere else for us to go. If we can’t leave Earth, then why are we slowly trashing it?
Everyone thinks that we can rely on scientists and climatologists to solve all of the problems that go along with global warming, when really the climatlogists cannot do anything without our cooperation. Climatologists need us to participate in saving our planet any way that we can. We don’t necessarily have to take part in huge environmental tasks. It is our job to help save the planet, and we can help do so with several little tasks each day.
Luckily, some of the ways to help solve the problem of global warming are very simple. For example, planting trees can help immensely because trees help absorb the surplus of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Another example is if we change regular, high wattage light bulbs to fluorescent light bulbs we can make a huge difference in our environment. These are some of the very easy things we can do to help reduce the greenhouse gas emissions in Earths atmosphere.
Some big things we can do for our environment include not burning greenhouse gasses, or fossil fuels. You could also start a global movement against global warming. One of the most effective ways to prevent global warming would be to raise attention to, and lobby about it to senators who make immense decisions about the priorities and economy of the United States. If all humans contributed to do these steps to solve global warming, then global warming will stop affecting the Earth. However I know that is not easy. Everything that we do for our planet makes a difference, no matter how big or small. Whether you have a big idea, or a big heart there is always something you can do to better protect the environment we live in.
There is so much disagreement on global warming for no apparent reason. What do critics who disagree with people concerned about global warming get out of disagreement besides a paycheck anyway? Do they even really believe in their argument? I just do not understand how they can disagree with climatologists, when there is so much evidence. To what extent will they start listening to the scientifically proven facts?
The critics of global warming have very twisted values. At some point, we will all suffer their consequence; the consequence of no longer being able to live on our planet earth. This goes to show; we are all in this together.
Overall, I think the problem with global warming is not our atmosphere; it is what we as humans are doing to the atmosphere. If we do not start putting the brakes on global warming soon, we are in for some deep trouble. So…What can you do to stop global warming?
To me, global warming is a conflict of who to trust. I watched both The Great Global Warming Swindle, and An Inconvenient truth, which both greatly contradicted each other. This puzzled me because I had no idea which site to trust. They both seemed credible and they both made good points, so how am I supposed to know which one is more superior? If you explore the internet for different views on global warming, you will get a countless amount of different answers and ideas on what global warming is. To make it worse, some of the climatologists disagree with the fact that anthropogenic climate change exists. My question is “How do we know what to trust” or rely on, and if nobody can validate their point, how do we know that it even exists?
I do know, however that Global warming is a huge issue that has been going on for a lot longer than we think. Global warming occurs everywhere on earth, however according to Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth over the years global warming has increased greatly in the Arctic. Climatologists believe that the Arctic may be warming up more than the other parts of the world due to the results of the Albedo effect. The snow and ice that naturally cover the arctic are bright white, so they reflect up to 90% of the Earth’s sunlight. This reflecting process truly helps the earth and our ocean from overheating. As that ice melts because of the increased trapped greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere, the ocean neighboring the arctic absorbs more heat, which melts the arctic even more. Here the cycle re-loops itself. We are the only ones who can stop this cycle. As humans, it is our job to take care of this planet. We need to do anything we can to stop this cycle of global warming.
