Mercury Poisoning

In my Writers Workshop class we have been working on group projects for the last few weeks. We were able to pick any subject that we wanted. I was parted with three other Boys and we picked the topic of Mercury. Our full question is “How does the emission of Mercury impact the toxicity levels of water and our everyday life?” I guess you could say that the point of this blog post is for your responses. The problem is that we have to address a particular group of people, and we don’t know who to tell. I am going to give some of the information that we have received from researching and I just really want your comments on who you think that we should address.

To begin Mercury is the 80th Element on the Periodic Table. The symbol for Mercury is hg. Mercury is also the only metal that is liquid at room temperature. This substance can be found in things like coal. Now a Disadvantage of Mercury is that it can cause nervous system failures if large amounts of it are ingested. At times it can even cause death.

When Mercury gets into water small microbes absorb tiny fractions of it.  Then comes a series of unfortunate events. The next thing to happen is a small fish comes and eats thousands of the microbes resulting in that fish being poisoned. Next a bigger fish will come and eat the smaller fish  poisoning itself. Then a bigger fish eats the other bigger fish and is poisoned by the Mercury. This of course happens over and over again, but the fish that is impacted the most by Mercury poisoning would have to be the Tuna Fish. This occurs because tuna fish eat the most fish. This has to tie in to the last part of our question because the FDA (U.S Food and Drug Administration) has a limit on certain fish that women can eat. Tuna is one of the top fish that women are not aloud to eat. Another way that Mercury gets into the water is when coal is burned the mercury from the inside of the coal is released into the air and when it rains it falls into the water. The Dangers for pregnant women eating fish is extraordinary. First the Mercury will affect the mothers fetus, and it also can affect the mothers breast milk. This could lead to long -term brain issues. It can also cause birth defects such as hearing impairments and learning disabilities.

The notes that we have gotten so far really answer our question and help us better understand what Mercury Poison is and what it can do to you. Now the last thing is that we wanted to talk or share our message with High Schoolers and Junior High Students. Do you think that is the right group of people to talk to or do you think we should talk to adults and also in what form do you think we should present it. Comment to give your thoughts and opinions.

Solar Charged? Energy Efficient? 100% Electric? Am I in the Right Country?

We recently talked to a man by the name of Taylor Hills. He  came to our class and talked to us about Global Warming and the company that he worked at. During part of his speech he mentioned a company called Tesla Motors.

Tesla Motors is a Silicon Valley-based company. The company designs, manufactures and sells electric vehicles.

Tesla Motors was founded in 2003 by a few scientists that wanted to prove that electric cars are and will be awesome. Tesla Motors and their engineers are mostly focused on obviously making energy efficient cars, but also decreasing aerodynamic losses. One of the cars that they affectedly did this with was the Model S. The Model S is one of the most aerodynamic sedans ever built. These cars are the only cars to get more efficient from the moment they are first driven.

When you purchase a Tesla Motors car you have a choice of which battery you want to get. There are  3 batteries. Battery A is a 40 kWh battery. It can go 160 miles in a full charge, 0 to 60 in 6.5 seconds and a top speed of 110. Battery B is a 60 kWh battery. It can go 230 miles in a full charge, 0 to 60 in 6.5 seconds and a top speed of 120. Battery C is an 85 kWh battery. It can go 300 miles in a full charge, 0 to 60 in 6.5 seconds and a top speed of 125.

These cars are actually really fast they go from 0 to 60 in 5.6 seconds. The car can travel at a top speed of 125 miles per hour. This car emits no pollutants into the air because it has no tailpipe. This car is not like other cars it does not pollute the air. Other cars such as gasoline powered vehicles ad hybrids burn refined petroleum.

Tesla Motors cars have no engine under the hood. ( Which also works as free space totaling up to be 5.3 cubic feet.) They run on energy. Well you think, how do you charge the car? The back left rear light you can open up and there is a plug where you can plug the car up. There are chargers you can get and plug them up in your own house or garage. There are also some chargers that are called Superchargers. There are six stations around the U.S. They are made to give people have a charge in 30 minutes. Which for these cars is about 150 miles of range. With a full charge it can go about 300 miles. The device works like an adrenaline shot, except for your car.

The cars are very spacious. They can comfortably fit 5 adults and 2 children. The car even has two usb ports. With so much room in the car with the seats folded down you would have over 58 cubic feet of storage. Depending on what you like on your car, one of the options for the car is a sun roof. This sun roof is different though it blocks 81% of heat and blocks 98% visibility of the sun.

The Tesla Motors cars have built themselves up on a very good empire and a very good start. They have stores all over the nation and they are sold out of cars in the U.S. Even I am interested in the cars that they have. ( No offense but the Model S is my favorite and what I think to be the way to go.) For any of the people out there that read this and are able to afford a car just under 120,000 dollars, I would suggest getting the car. Could this be a start towards the world of going green. Starting off in the field of cars and then moving to something else.

Is Everything Cool or Shocking?

As a class we recently watched the movie Everything’s Cool.

” The director of the Movie Dan Gold said that the motivation for the film that “I’m optimistic that finally the message that this is real, that human beings are the cause of the most recent warming trend, and that it’s an important issue, that message is actually reaching America.”

Everything’s Cool talks about the reasons why Global Warming is real; the movie gives examples of why Global Warming is true. The film talks about the unknown facts you and I don’t hear or know about. For example one unknown fact that I learned about in the movie is the story of Phillip Cooney.

One of the main persons that attempted to keep the real facts of Global Warming away from the people was Phillip Cooney:

Phillip Cooney  is a former member of the administration of United States President George W. Bush. Before being appointed to chair the Council on Environmental Quality, he was a lawyer and lobbyist for the American Petroleum Institute. He was accused of doctoring scientific reports by other agencies. He then resigned his position and conceded such actions.

His job was to prepare scientific reports on climate change and give them to Congress. He resigned from his job when he blew the case on the White House scandal on Global Warming. Cooney said that he was resigning because he wanted to spend more time with his family. He then found a job two days later with an oil company.

I think that the whole Global Warming scandal is very shocking. I think that the whole thing is very surprising and very open eyed. The one thing that I think is that if he has been doing that for a while, then the Government hasn’t been thinking about this matter. I think that this affects the overall thoughts and discussions of the Government. Meaning that if Phillip Cooney wasn’t changing all of the information then maybe Global Warming would be more out in the Public and we would’t be at this dramatic stage in Global Warming like we are now.

One of the things that shocked me the most was the fact that a man by the name of Bish Neuhouser wanted to try and make his car run on biodiesel. He said that if it works with his car he wants to do it with all of the Canyon’s Vehicles. When you think of the fact that the President isn’t doing anything you also have to say to yourself, no one really thinks or cares about Global Warming. If he says something like I want to do something about Global Warming and focuses for 4 years on Global Warming and people don’t believe in it, he could lose a lot of votes. I think that it would take a while for the people to realize about Global Warming.

Mr. Laney said “I think that Global Warming would have to hit someone in the face for them to realize that it was actually happening. We have an average high life expectancy and if he we had a shorter life expectancy then that could be the slap in the face.”

Is this the only thing that we are being lied to about? Could something else in this world be on a spiral towards bad. For all we know the world could actually end on one of these days that it’s supposedly going to, but how would we know.

Free Answers (With Strings Attached) Did we bring it upon ourselves?

As a class we recently watched The Great Global Warming Swindle, and Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth.  Global Warming, was this man made? Did we bring this upon ourselves? Nobel Peace Prize winner Al Gore and 97 percent scientists agree that the Earth is heating up, and that global warming is due to the increase in carbon dioxide. The burning of coal and petroleum mostly causes global warming they say  With a lot of skeptics about global warming the National Geographic decided to take it under their arms to clear the air about this matter. National Geographic called upon Eric Steig, an earth scientist.  Eric Steig watched a preview screening of The Great Global Warming Swindle, and he says

“That the documentary handles the science well.” Eric says “I was looking for errors, and that nothing much struck me as overblown or wrong.”

There was an experiment conducted that shows that in the last 30 years hurricanes and typhoons have become more powerful. The experiment also shows that this powerfulness or rising of power in hurricanes has a connection with the rising in the ocean surface temperature. (Ocean heat is like that last puzzle piece towards the hurricanes formations.)

National Geographic says that Global Warming is happening. National Geographic say that the temperature has risen 1.4 degrees since 1880. That may seem like a long time ago, but the rising temperature has started to happen in the last few decades. The rising in the temperature has been proven by the last 2 decades that have been the hottest in 400 years. National Geographicalso say that it may have been the warmest for the last few millenniums. Studies show that possibly by 2040 we may have an ice free summer. An example of the ice melting rapidly is the Montana’s Glacier National park. Today it only has 27 glaciers, and in 1910 it had 150. That is only 102 years apart. Some expert scientists say that global warming causes wildfires, heat waves and strong tropical storms.

Humans are really just throwing their carbon dioxide out of the window and into the air or atmosphere. We constantly continue to pour our contents of Co2 into the atmosphere, and we are doing it faster than the plants and oceans can absorb. National Geographic says, “These gases persist in the atmosphere for years, meaning that even if such emissions were eliminated today, it would not immediately stop global warming.”  What could Global Warming lead to? The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change or the IPCC said in April of 2007 that global warming could lead to large-scale food and water shortages and possible catastrophic effects on wildlife.  Sea levels would rise and there would be stronger natural disasters.

Could the humans on earth have dug themselves into a hole so deep there is no possible way out?
